Lauryn’s Story

Part I
How 2019 changed everything
Lauryn has always been a smart, analytical kid who can usually find her way through any problem by researching the solution. Skilled at biology and chemistry, she easily understands the order of the world and, now in her adolescence, is finding her place within it. There is a lot that fascinates her, but reptiles and amphibians are some of her most beloved subjects. Her two geckos, Ollie and Isabelle, as well as her Pacman frog Cecil, are the stars of her Instagram channel and her life. She is so interested in these creatures that she hopes to become a herpetologist one day to pursue further study and research. But first she must graduate from high school. Lauryn and Cecil

Up until May 2019, something like just going to school was never a worry for Lauryn or her parents. That all changed when Lauryn, then 16-years-old, briefly lost consciousness during gym class. Their search for answers finally led them to the Pediatric Cardiology department at BC Children’s Hospital. When the tests were complete and multiple doctors and researchers returned to the room with the results, Lauryn’s parents knew in an instant that something was serious. They were told Lauryn had a rare, genetic heart condition known as Catecholaminergic Polymorphic Ventricular Tachycardia (otherwise known as CPVT), which causes a potentially fatal arrhythmia when her heart rate is elevated. Because the arrhythmia can lead to cardiac arrest if left untreated, Lauryn was prescribed daily medications to keep it under control.

In addition to all the usual stresses of being a teenager preparing for her future, Lauryn had this worry added to her plate. The only thing she can do is trust the medications and carry on as best as possible. Her supportive team of physicians and nurses at BCCH thought a wish might be a good distraction and they referred her to Children’s Wish in June 2019. Little did she know she was about to start one of the most exciting journeys of her life.

“We got a call that she had been granted a wish and we were all completely floored. It didn’t enter our minds that something like that would be within the realm of possibility,” her mom says. “At first I was terrified because it confirmed the new reality of Lauryn’s diagnosis. The fear subsided and was replaced with immense gratitude because Lauryn is so special and deserving of this gift. Children’s Wish has given us all the gift of hope and optimism. Something we can share as a family and cherish forever.” It didn’t take Lauryn a second to know what she would do with her wish: swim with the marine iguanas in the Galapagos Islands this March.
